Shark Attack Statistics

Shark attacks are a relatively rare occurrence, and the chances of being attacked by a shark are very low. However, it is still important to be aware of the statistics surrounding shark attacks.
According to the International Shark Attack File (ISAF), there were a total of 57 confirmed unprovoked shark attacks worldwide in 2021, with 10 fatalities. This represents a decrease from the 71 confirmed unprovoked attacks in 2020, but an increase from the five-year (2016-2020) average of 57 incidents per year.
The United States had the highest number of unprovoked shark attacks in 2021, with 34 incidents. Florida had the most attacks of any state, with 26 incidents. Other countries with high numbers of shark attacks in 2021 include Australia (14), South Africa (9), and Brazil (7).
It is worth noting that the vast majority of shark attacks are non-fatal. According to the ISAF, the average number of fatalities worldwide from unprovoked shark attacks is around six per year. More people die each year from lightning strikes or dog attacks than from shark attacks.
It is also important to keep in mind that humans are not the intended prey of sharks. Most shark attacks occur when a shark mistakes a person for its natural prey or is provoked by human activity, such as spearfishing or feeding sharks.
Overall, while shark attacks are a concern for some people, the risk of being attacked by a shark is still very low.
